Revegetation

The Virginia Horticulture Centre can assist you in the development of a Revegetation plan for your property. Revegetation can help you by assisting in pest management, soil salinity, water filtration and the overall look of your property.

Pest, Disease and Weed Management

Projects have been developed within the area to address increased prevalence of these threats to horticulture.  The Clean up the Adelaide Plains project for example has been formed in collaboration with the Western Flower Thrips Steering Committee, local council, catchment boards, landcare groups and SARDI’s “Revegtation by design” project.

These projects have combined local expertise, expert knowledge and research to provide information, education and support to growers for integrated pest and disease management, reduction in chemical use, soil degradation and labour costs, while repairing landscape and becoming more attractive and diverse.

We are now able to recommend specific native species as a potential alternative for weed control (pictured below).  The Virginia Horticulture Centre also provides a FREE weed slash to every grower member.

Clean Up & Plastic Recycling

In conjunction with drumMuster the Virginia Horticulture Centre is now a drop-off point for all used chemical drums and containers.  With the purchase of a new hydraulic plastic press we can now offer FREE collection of waste plastic to every member.

To date we have pressed approx 200 tonnes of plastic and12,500 chemical drums for export and recycling.

Water Management

The Virginia Horticulture Centre is providing support for water utilisation through the retention of green house rainwater run off.   It is now a requirement that all new greenhouse or horticultural building applications to council are approved only on evidence of a Virginia Horticulture Centre approved water-recycling system.

The development of the Thompson’s creek wetland and the degraded regional watercourse is being addressed through extensive civil works aimed at taking pressure of the underground water table.  This has been achieved in coordination with local councils such as The City of Playford.  We are encouraging landholders within these projects, that changes need to be made to ensure the sustainability of horticulture within the affected areas.
